OPEN Talk: 'What Would You Say...You Do Here?': Measuring Success as an Engineering Manager

Have you ever been asked what you do as an engineering manager? Have you ever wondered it yourself?

Moving from developer to manager can lead to a sense of loss of productivity. At the end of a week as a developer you could look back and say, "Look at all the things I accomplished this week". As a manager, it's too easy to say, "Look at all the things my team accomplished this week, but what did I do?"

I believe that there are two simple areas that engineering managers can focus to measure their success, frame their activities, and regain their sense of productivity. In this talk, I'll discuss these areas (results and retention), some of the activities that encompass a typical manager's day (1:1s, parleying with areas of the business competing for your team, recruiting, etc.), and the path to management.

If you're a developer interested in management or a manager struggling to articulate what value you bring to the table, then this talk is designed for you!
